The Tragedy of the Armenians Genocide Essay examples

â€Å"A genocide is a form of one-sided mass killing in which a state or other authority intends to destroy a group, as that group and membership in it are defined by the perpetrator†. (Frank Chalk and Kurt Jonassohn, 2005). It is an inhumane thought that a particular group should be extinct because of the perpetrators outlook of that society. Learning about Adolf Hitler and the tragedy of the Holocaust, was a changing point to many, of how ones society could be exterminated because of one’s hair and eye color, sexual preference, religious affiliation, the perpetrators mood that day. Adolf was a wicked, selfish man, which only had a specific rule on how the world should be. The Leaders of the murders were found guilty. This genocide is highly controversial because not too many of p eople admit to what happened. To this present day, it is against the law in Turkey to talk about the events that happened in the Armenian Genocide. One of the worst cases of a Genocide ever reported by man, was the Cambodian Genocide. A party leader of the, Khmer Rouge, commonly known as â€Å"Pol Pot†, became in charge of running and making laws of Cambodia, killed over 2 million of Cambodia’s total population. Pol Pot wanted to create the ideal communist model, and was seeking to create just that. The Khmer Rouge believed that all Cambodians should be slave workers of collective farms. Anyone that did not follow by this rule was executed. This rule was not limited to Muslims, Christians, Intellectuals, educated people, and religious enthusiasts. The Khmer Rouge were not very trusting. They frequently spied and interrogated members of their group to make sure they were on the right side. Millions were forced to work without medical supply and/or food. Sadly all these lives were lost because no one had the power or strength to stop it from happening. Criminal Justice and Corrections Staci Pribbenow Kaplan University Introduction Criminal justice has been a passion of mine for many years. It wasn’t until recently that I decided to go back to school to obtain my master’s degree in criminal justice. I have chosen to focus on the field of corrections in the criminal justice system. I want to make a difference and help those individuals that need help once being released from a prison setting. These three skills are managing uncertainty and renewal, managing stakeholders and business partners, and managing people and limited resources. Plucknette explained the functional differences of how a leader and manager differ in their approach to getting the job done. In short, Plucknette describes a leader as who has a broad vision of the future and will work and adjust to obtain long term goals. Leaders motivate people and engage them on a personal level, willing to learn about the individual and develop a relationship. Leaders are risk takers and gamble on the long term outcomes (Fischer, 2015). Leaders are willing to engage in debates and are not afraid to ask or answer open ended questions. Managers on the other hand function in a much smaller environment and focus on the production goal of the short time as a day or week. Managers oversee the daily grind of the production team and are in charge of the results. Managers risks are taken on a much smaller scale and can be measured either positive or negatively very quickly (Searle, 2013). Managers work closely with individuals but are mainly interested in getting the job done quickly, safely and efficiently. Not a lot of personal involvement is done at this level by a manager. It would be a great benefit for any organization to possess several leader/managers. The many differences in job needs, functions and diversity proves this to be far to difficult for many individuals. I would agree with author that a leader will feel comfortable in this role and understands the need to maintain motivation and mentor individuals through changes or challenges. Again, the details of how and holding individuals accountable wont come as easily as it will be for the manager type of supervisor. The leader will begin the organization of a project team by either heading the project themselves or delegating a project manager. The leader oversees the development of teams with diverse individuals who possess the skill sets needed to ensure the project critical in the success and overall performance of the project (Chuang Jiang, 2016). The article is a good article as authors have also discussed about the role of various stakeholders. Managers have to ensure their leaders are getting the job done, that they are organized and ready at all times. Managers are not as personal with heir employees as leaders. They will create the plan as to what needs to be organized and delegated but will leave the duties to the leaders. The bottom line form the learning from the article is that developing trust and respect is vital to successfully managing and leading an organization. I do agree that leaders are better organizers and managers are better at controlling and planning. It is very challenging for both leaders and managers to effectively maintain the vision, mission and values of the organization (Bolman Deal, 2014).I believe that the ability to communicate effectively is the most important quality a leader should possess and is vital to success. A leader should be trusted by their employees so they can gain their cooperation. A leader should behave with consistency so others can count on the leaders' intentions and direction. If employees don't feel the leader has their best interests in mind, they will not be as likely to follow them. Workplace trust guides how everyone operates and fosters a culture of growth and success. One of things that stand out to me in this article is that leader are people that motivate with, measuring performance. True motivation will only come when a leader leads by example. This can be a short-coming of a great leader. Leadership can provide great encouragement where it brings the best out of people. Yet, in some situations they can leave boundary lines blurred. Where in such situations it can cause problems and loss of money. In todays business world, I believe possessing management skills is not enough or sufficient to be successful as an executive. Its important to understand the difference between leading and managing and integrating the two in order to be able to influence change or influence others to follow. A good leader is admired by many, they stand out and people like them because they know those leaders will support their efforts within the organization (DuBrin, 2015). When leading employees, either by motivation, role modeling or as a manager leading employees to meet production goals. The challenge of employees not buying into and believing in the goals can be felt by both a leader and a manager.I do agree with authors what indicated about what a leader must manage balance. They must manage balance the needs of the people and that of the organization. In many instances, they are not very distinct in nature. For example, in order for a company to be successful in whatever realm it functions, it must first have an effective team that is aligning with company goals. The team will only align when they find a way to feel and know they are part of the company and not an item that gets the job done. Innovation greatest impact is needed in controlling the direction of staff and organizational goals. Leadership is essential to drive performance (Solomon, 2016). An effective leader has willing followers which in turn helps control the climate and environment in which an organization operates.In the first management function of planning, a leader c an integrate leadership by reflecting on where the company is and where it would like to be. Leaders should seek ideas from all employees and take time to reflect and plan which ideas to implement. Employees are a great source for innovative ideas and when ideas come from within, promote comradery, empowerment, and acceptance. Xeroxes never sent a m singer to demand Sprats surrender, because the Spartan had a reputation similar to the one this scene gave them. The scene is included in the film because it establishes Leonia a s a protector of his country and the people in it. Another invented scene is the one where Aphelia sees asks to join the Spartan ranks. Leonia seems remorseful and compassionate when he is UN fortunately unable to use Philters in battle. Again, the filmmakers portray Leonia as a caring kin g who wants only the best for the Greek people. Yet another liberty with history taken by the fill makers is the cone where the Arcadian abandon the fight. We already know that the Arc Diana in the film represent a much more diverse group of Greeks, but the Spartan did not sat ND alone to face their death as they did in the film.The Thespian and Thebes soldiers remained all inside them. The filmmakers made this choice because the Spartan fighting and sacrificing the messes alone is significantly cooler and more meaningful. The reason for these scenes and his tortilla imaginations is to show that Leonia and the Spartan are infallible defender s of freedom, justice, and the Spartan way of life. The film is great for understanding the Battle of Thermopile, if you take it w tit a grain 2 of salt.Some things should be fairly obvious inventions, like the monstrous nature Of the 3 Persian soldiers and the role of the Peppers in preventing Leonia from fight nag. Other things dont necessarily matter, like how Philters is a cripple in the film and the nu embers of the Persians are exaggerated. These changes serve to smooth out the plot and m eke it easier to understand while cutting down on time. A filmmaker has to define the world, and sometimes 4 details have to be sacrificed. However, some aspects of the film are unfortunate for learning history. The Spartan method of training soldiers didnt send lone seven year o old boys to fend for themselves. The Spartan method of government is greatly skewed for the purr poses of the plot. In reality, it involved two separate kings, one for home and another for war, and this film makes no mention of that fact. The film also portrays the Spartan senate as being dice Veda by a young corrupt man. Only retired soldiers over the age of 60 were senators, and they had great reputations and connections to the Spartan people.The misinformation is unfit ordinate, but despite all of this, the film still communicates the basic facts about the Battle of There maypole to its 5 viewers. 300 Spartan and a handful of other Greeks stand against almost numerous S hordes Of Persian invaders. They are betrayed and eventually die while fighting in a valid NT effort. All of 6 this is learned by the people who watch , and that is invaluable. Finding the line between fact and entertainment is difficult, and the film isnt trying to teach. It serves to get 7 people interested in a subject they wouldnt have otherwise noticed.

The New Career Path for Headmasters - Then and Now The route to the headmasters office has changed. Once upon a time, the headmaster, often referred to as the head of a school, was almost certainly somebody with teaching and administrative experience. Better yet, he or she was an alumnus or an alumna - an old boy or an old girl, well connected and respected within the community. However, in an increasingly competitive marketplace with higher expectations placed on schools, the profile of the head of school is changing. To be sure, its a gradual change. But its a change nonetheless, and its occurring because the challenges facing a head of school these days require experiences and skill sets not usually found in a person who is first and foremost an educator. The Way It Used to Be For years, the way to the top of the private school organization chart was through the hallowed halls of academe. You graduated from college with a degree in your subject. You were engaged as a teacher, coached your team sport, kept your nose clean, married acceptably, raised some children of your own, became dean of students, and after 15 or 20 years you were in the running for head of school. Most of the time that worked just fine. You knew the drill, understood the clientele, accepted the curriculum, made a few changes, tweaked the faculty appointments ever so slightly, steered clear of controversy, and magically, there you were: receiving a nice check and being put out to pasture after 20 years or so as head of school. The Way It Is Now Life got complicated in 90s, however. Years ago, it used to be that the head could run his school simply by looking out his office window and observing what was going on. A periodic look in at the faculty lounge and an occasional meeting with alumni and parents to raise some money - it all was pretty straightforward. Even a bit dull. Not any more. The head of a private school in the new millennium has to have the executive ability of Fortune 1000 executive, the diplomatic skills of Ban Ki-moon and the vision of Bill Gates. S/he has to deal with substance abuse. S/he has to be politically correct. His graduates have to get into the right colleges. He has to raise millions for this project and that. He has to sort through legal issues which would numb the mind of a Philadelphia lawyer. He needs the diplomatic skills of an ambassador to deal with parents. His technology infrastructure costs a fortune and doesnt seem to have improved teaching at all. On top of all this, his admissions department now has to compete for students with several other schools which years ago could hardly be considered the competition if they existed at all. CEO vs Educator Many people first acknowledged this shift in  the summer of 2002, when Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York City surprised the masses by  appointing a lawyer/executive with no formal educational administrative training as Chancellor of the New York City schools. As CEO of the Bertelsmann, Inc. media conglomerate, Joel I. Klein brought vast business experience to that most complicated of assignments. His appointment served as a wake up call to the educational establishment as a whole that new and imaginative approaches to school administration are needed. This was only the first step in what soon became a rapidly changing environment.   Private schools shifted from viewing themselves solely as academic institutions to operating under dual roles: schools and businesses. The academic side of operations continues to grow and flourish with the changing times, often faster than the business side of these elite institutions. However, heads have begun to acknowledge the need for augmented admission offices to recruit students, development offices to raise money to support school operations, and business offices to better manage the daily financial needs of schools and their communities. The need for strong marketing and communications has also become apparent, and continues to grow rapidly, with schools employing large offices of skilled professionals working to develop new target audience.   The new heads role isnt to simply ensure that everything plugs along in terms of day to day tasks. But rather, the new head is responsible for leading a powerful group of professionals who are working to ensure that the school thrives in difficult and at times, downright volatile market conditions. While the head isnt expected to know how to do everything, he or she is expected to provide clear and concise goals and strategic vision.   The biggest, and often hardest change for many to swallow is the need to  see families as customers and not only as parents of students with malleable minds which need solid training, nurturing and direction for success in later life.  Ã‚   Characteristics to Look for Choosing the right head is critical part of moving your school successfully through changing circumstances and financial tough times. Given the large number of constituencies within a school community you will need to find a strategic leader and consensus builder. A good head listens well. S/he understands the widely differing needs of parents, faculty and students, yet demands the partnership and cooperation of all three groups to accomplish his educational goals. S/he is a skilled sales person who has a solid grip on the facts and can articulate them convincingly. Whether s/he is raising money, speaking at a seminar in his area of expertise or addressing a faculty meeting, s/he represents and sells the school to everybody s/he encounters. A good head is a leader and an exemplar. His vision is clear and well thought out. His moral values are above reproach. A good head manages effectively. S/he delegates to others and holds them accountable. A good head doesnt have to prove himself. He knows what is required and accomplishes it. Hire a Search Firm The reality is that to find this person, you may have to spend some money and hire a search firm to identify suitable candidates. Appoint a search committee which can include trustees as well as representatives from your school community such as a student, a faculty member and an administrator. The search committee will vet the applicants and present a candidate for the board of trustees approval. Hiring a new headmaster is a process. It takes time. If you do it right, you have charted a path for success. Get it wrong and the results could be just the opposite.
